Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
The City of La Mirada contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for law enforcement services. The Sheriff's Department provides general law enforcement, traffic enforcement, crime investigation, and special services.
The primary function of patrol deputies is crime prevention. These deputies patrol the City in an effort to deter criminal activity in our neighborhood. When patrol deputies are not answering dispatched calls, they are encouraged to conduct proactive patrols, which includes looking for potential problems, suspicious persons or situations, and executing arrest warrants.
Sheriff's traffic units are essential in reducing injury traffic collisions throughout the City. Traffic deputies enforce “moving” violations such as speed, failure to obey traffic signs, seatbelt laws, etc. They are crucial in preventing accidents that can cause serious injury or death.
The Detective Bureau is responsible for the investigation of crimes. In the last couple of years, the Detective Bureau has effectively attained the necessary information in order to submit successful investigations to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
The City’s Special Assignment Officers (SAO) is a team of deputies that proactively enforce crimes involving gang, juvenile, and narcotics activities. SAO deputies coordinate with other deputies, Detectives, Probation, and civilian Public Safety Officers to develop information necessary to resolve ongoing crimes and nuisances within the City. The SAO Team is committed to community-based, problem-oriented policing and has implemented aggressive crime suppression programs. The SAO Team is dedicated to maintaining La Mirada’s high standards and quality of life through proactive enforcement and collaborative efforts with the community.
Through the Sheriff’s Department, specialized Sheriff's investigative units are also available to assist with arson, robbery, forgery, fraud, sex offenses, child abuse and industrial crime. The Sheriff's helicopter patrol (Aero Unit) provides critical support services for ground units during emergency situations.
A patrol sergeant is assigned to each shift. The patrol sergeant reports to the La Mirada Service Area Sergeant and supervises deputies assigned to general law and traffic enforcements under their command. The patrol sergeant enforces department procedures, monitors calls handled by patrol deputies, reviews incident reports, and offers guidance to deputies when needed.
The City’s Service Area Sergeant is responsible for the direct oversight of field personnel and their activities. In addition, the Sergeant receives and records personnel complaints, investigates force and resolves personnel issues. The Service Area Sergeant plays a key role in ensuring the Public Safety Team provides quality service and the needs of the community are being met.
