Applying for a City of La Mirada Job
Can I apply for any position at anytime?
The City of La Mirada only accepts applications for positions that are advertised as “Open.” Applications are not accepted unless a recruitment is open.
What does "Open Continuous" mean?
This means the position will close without notice once a sufficient number of applications from qualified individuals have been received. If you intend to mail your application, call the Human Resources Office to confirm that the position has not closed.
How will I know what jobs I am qualified for and when to apply?
When a position becomes available, the Human Resources Office posts the open position on the City's web site located in the "Employment Opportunity" section. Human Resources also sends announcements to surrounding cities, universities, community colleges and adult schools. Occasionally, Human Resources will post ads in local newspapers or in other publications.
What are some other things I need to know when applying?
For your application to receive full consideration, fill out the application completely on-line through NEOGOV even if you choose to include a resume along with your application. The City of La Mirada does not not accept resumes in lieu of an application. Also, do not simply state "See Resume" when asked to describe your responsibilities and experience. Your qualifications will be based on the information you provide on your application. Your resume will only be reviewed for clarification purposes. If you need more space to describe additional work experience, you may use an additional application form or continue on a separate sheet of paper using the same format.
A completed criminal history supplemental questionnaire is required along with the City application for positions in Recreation, Aquatics and Public Safety. For all other positions, if the City determines that an applicant meets the minimum employment qualifications as stated in the job flyer, the applicant will then be required to complete a criminal supplemental questionnaire stating whether he or she has been convicted of a criminal offense and to provide information regarding his or her criminal before he or she may be considered further in the recruitment process.
Occasionally a second supplemental questionnaire is required along with the City application. The second supplemental questionnaire focuses on the responsibilities of the position an applicant is applying for and allows the applicant to elaborate on previous experience.
Certain positions may request a copy of a certificate(s) along with the application and supplemental questionnaire(s).
What should I do if I have a change of address or phone number?
You should immediately update your profile on the NEOGOV website and notify the Human Resources Office of your change. If we are unable to contact you because you have moved or changed your phone number without our knowledge, you may be withdrawn from further consideration.
What should I do if I am out of town when the recruitment closes?
You should immediately notify the Human Resources Office. The Human Resources Office will make a note of your absence and may be able to reschedule your interview if you are selected to participate in this process.
If I previously completed an application will I be automatically considered for other positions?
No. You must submit a separate application, supplemental questionnaire(s) and a certificate(s) (if applicable) for each open recruitment in NEOGOV.
What happens after I submit my application on-line through NEOGOV?
You will receive a notification by email on the status of your application after the filing deadline. Each application is given careful review and consideration. Recruitments that generate a large number of applicants may take longer to process.
What are the steps or phases of the recruitment and selection process?
A detailed description of the process is in the "Recruitment Process" area of the web site.
If an examination is given, does everyone who applies for the open position take the test?
Only certain positions require a test as part if the selection process. Each application is carefully reviewed based on the job requirements. Only those candidates whose experience and training most closely match the City's needs will be invited to participate in the testing process. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements of the position may not be invited to participate in the testing process.
What happens after I complete an examination?
You will be notified of your test results as soon as possible by email. If you have successfully passed the written or practical examination, you may be invited to the next phase of the selection process.
What should I do if I am invited to an interview?
Please confirm with the City receptionist at 562) 943-0131 at least one day prior to the interview if you plan to attend the interview or, if applicable, self schedule your interview through NEOGOV. Make sure you are on time, or early for the interview. If you are unsure of your interview location, date and/or time, feel free to contact Human Resources at 562) 902-2355.
What happens after the interview?
You will be notified as soon as possible of your interview results. Applicants who will not continue in the selection process will be notified by email. Applicants invited to participate in a second interview will be notified by telephone or email. Those receiving a job offer will be contacted by telephone.
