The Public Works Department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of City-owned public facilities, parks, and rights-of-way. Public Works contributes to planning the Five-Year Capital Improvement Program budget, develops plans and specifications, recommends the selection of contractors, and manages the implementation of approved capital projects. The Department coordinates the rights-of-way activities of utility companies serving the community. Public Works provides encroachment permit review, approval, and inspection services. In addition, Public Works ensures the City’s compliance with relevant environmental regulations. The Department also manages a wide range of contract services including the refuse agreement, street sweeping, and activities of the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works.

The Parks Division maintains the parks and athletic facilities to provide aesthetically pleasing environments along with useful athletic and play areas. La Mirada's tree lined streets and small town charm is largely a result of the efforts of the Public Works General Maintenance Division. Graffiti removal and tree maintenance on residential and major streets are two elements of general maintenance which contribute the most to the aesthetic beauty of the community. The graffiti crew provides seven day coverage for graffiti removal. City crews also maintain street signs and provide some repair work for the City's roads, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. Crews responsible for medians and panels provide maintenance for all entryways, turf on center medians and panels, and roadside clean-up.

La Mirada's civic facilities are aesthetic focal points of the community. Maintenance crews provide janitorial services, grounds keeping, minor structural repair and maintenance, and set up of facilities for community events.

Environmental Management is responsible for Air Quality, and Refuse and Recycling Management.
